In this blog series, we interview a member of the clypd team every month. Find out what drives us, what makes us tick, and what we do outside of the clypd office. In this month’s clypd Profile, we talk to James Garfield, Principal Software Engineer.
Can you describe your job and an average day working at clypd?
I like to get in about an hour before our stand-up meeting to have time to make myself an Aeropress coffee, read my email, and catch up with engineers on other teams. I’m lucky enough to get to work on projects all over our tech stack, from standing up new platform APIs, integrating with data-science, and helping our UI team use state of the art technology. I try and fit all my meetings to synchronize on my projects in the mornings, so that I can concentrate on writing code in the afternoon. I also like to round out the day with a rousing game of foosball.
What excites you most about working at clypd?
Originally the technology stack and the opportunity to work with Go drew me to clypd, but now, being part of a team with such a great focus on engineering excellence with the ability to learn so much is what really drives me.
You’ve worked in the TV industry as a software engineer before, what makes clypd different from other companies you’ve worked?
Previously, I worked on software that helped the TV industry codify their existing processes and best practices, to make the day-to-day life of both Account Executives and their managers easier. At clypd, we’ve internalized learnings from both the TV and digital worlds and are positioned at the leading-edge of the current evolution of the TV industry, helping to drive that forward.
What do you think TV will be like in 50 years?
As the industry gains a deeper understanding of their audiences, we’ll see both more niche programming and advertising. At the same time, I think that television will rise to the challenge that digital streaming represents and produce more high-impact, wide-appeal “instant classics.”
Favorite beer that clypd has had on tap?
It’s hard to top the Hill Farmstead Edward.
What can we find you doing on the weekends?
I’m a sucker for live music, so if at all possible, you’ll find me at a concert somewhere. Otherwise you’ll find me at brunch, going for runs along the Charles, hanging out with my dog, or brewing beer.
What’s your favorite TV series of all time?
Currently I’d have to say Archer, but it’s difficult to describe the depths of my sadness when HBO canceled Carnivàle.
Best lunch spot in Davis Square?
You can only go on Fridays, but Rosebud’s is totally my jam. They have the best burger around.
What’s something that no one at clypd knows about you?
I once singed my eyelashes off making boeuf bourguignon using 180 proof brandy for the flambé.
